Ching says: Space is not emptiness. Space is defined by form. Without form, space is infinite, unusable, scary. With form, space becomes place.
A single vertical plane defines space in front of it. You feel it. Two vertical planes define space between them - a corridor, a street. Three planes define corner, more enclosure. Four planes define courtyard, almost complete.
Horizontal planes do different job: Base plane (floor) defines field - where you can walk. Elevated base plane defines platform - stage, sacred area. Depressed base plane defines pit - gathering, protection. Overhead plane (ceiling/roof) defines shelter - without walls, a roof alone creates space underneath.
The combination is architecture: Floor + 4 walls + roof = room. But even floor + roof with no walls = pavilion, still space, defined by horizontal planes only.
In Egyptian architecture, courtyard is master example: Four walls define void, but void is more important than walls. Life happens in void. Hassan Fathy understood this - he designed voids, not solids.
For shop drawings: Space definition is height. A 3m x 3m space with 2.4m ceiling feels different than same with 4m ceiling. First is intimate, second is monumental. Always section, not just plan. Plan lies about space, section tells truth.
Content idea: Show same 4 walls with different roof heights - 2.2m, 2.7m, 3.5m, no roof. Caption: "Same form, four different spaces." StudenChing says: Space is not emptiness. Space is defined by form. Without form, space is infinite, unusable, scary. With form, space becomes place.
