ARTICLE 12: POSITIVE & NEGATIVE SPACE - Figure Ground

Ching borrows from art: Positive space = solid, figure. Negative space = void, ground. But in architecture, both are positive.

Think of map of Cairo: Black = buildings (positive), white = streets and courtyards (negative). But white is where life happens. Negative space is not leftover, it's designed.

Good architecture designs negative space as carefully as positive. Bad architecture only designs buildings, leaving leftover spaces that become garbage areas, dark alleys.

Two tools: 1- Figure-ground reversal: Look at your plan, blacken voids instead of solids. Does void shape make sense? Are courtyards good shapes? Are corridors efficient? If void is ugly, plan is bad. 2- Nolli map: Famous map of Rome that shows public space as white, private as black. Shows how much city is actually public void.

In compounds, negative space is landscape, pools, paths. Developer often minimizes negative to maximize sellable positive (built area). Result: dense, uncomfortable compound with no breathing. Smart developer balances - 40% positive, 60% negative including landscape.

For technical office: Negative space is where MEP clashes happen. Ceiling void is negative space that must be designed. If you don't design it, ducts, pipes, beams fight. Reserve and shape negative space.

Instagram: Show Nolli map of your project - buildings black, open space white. It's beautiful graphic and proves you think urban, not just building. High share rate.
