ARTICLE 14: LIGHT AS FORM - The Invisible Material

Ching says: Light is not just to see form, light IS form. Light defines form, reveals texture, creates mood.

There are two lights: Natural and artificial. Natural changes - morning cold, noon harsh, sunset warm. Artificial constant - you control it. Good architecture uses both.

Light shapes space: Direct light creates sharp shadows, drama, focus. Diffused light creates softness, calm, evenness. Bounced light from floor creates soft ceiling glow. Light from above feels divine (mosque), light from side feels human (house), light from below feels scary (theater).

In section, light is volume. A skylight creates shaft of light - you see dust, you feel air. A clerestory creates wash of light on ceiling. A small opening creates spot, like spotlight on art.

Egyptian sun is harsh, not soft European. So light as form in Egypt means shadow as form. The shadow pattern of mashrabiya is form. The shadow of pergola is form. Design shadow, not just light.

Ching's exercise: Model your space with one opening, shine flashlight from different angles, photograph. You will understand light as material. Digital renders lie about light, physical model tells truth.

For technical coordination: Light fixture positions must be in reflected ceiling plan coordinated with structure and MEP. If you place downlight where beam is, you get problem. Coordinate light volume.

Instagram: Photo of light shaft in real building, not render. Caption: "We don't design walls, we design light that hits walls." Poetic posts get saved.
