For instance, Fort Christian the oldest remaining structure in the Virgin Islands sits in Charlotte Amalie. The fort has gone through many phases since its construction in 1666. Originally designed to protect the Danish settlement from other Europeans, the bright red fortress went on to be used as a jail, government hall and police station. Since 1982, Fort Christian has served  as the city finest history museum, while 

the roof  continues to offer the best panoramic views of  the city and its harbor.

A walk around Charlotte Amalie will also reveal such buildings as the Grand Hotel a beautiful 19th century resort that now houses shops in the downtown area and the Legislature Building a 19th century structure housing the government of the Virgin Islands, painted a vibrant Caribbean green.
