Chapter 7: Preparing the Foundations for BIM

 

 

Chapter 7 addresses the practical, organizational prerequisites for successful BIM implementation. The authors are blunt: attempting BIM without proper preparation leads to frustration, wasted investment, and project failures. The chapter provides a comprehensive readiness checklist organized into five categories. Hardware readiness: BIM models are computationally demanding. 

The chapter provides minimum specifications for workstations (multi-core processors, dedicated graphics cards with substantial VRAM, 32GB+ RAM, solid-state drives) and network infrastructure (sufficient bandwidth for transferring large models, reliable cloud synchronization). Software readiness: Organizations must select authoring tools (for model creation), review tools (for clash detection and quality assurance), and collaboration platforms (for CDE). 

The chapter advises against purchasing everything at once; instead, start with one pilot project and one software suite, then expand. People readiness: BIM requires new skills. Modelers must learn parametric modeling. Engineers must understand how to extract quantities for analysis. Project managers must learn to oversee information exchanges. The chapter recommends a training plan, identifying BIM champions within the organization, and considering BIM-specific roles like BIM Manager.

 Process readiness: Traditional workflows based on sequential document exchange must be redesigned around simultaneous, collaborative modeling. This includes developing naming conventions, version control protocols, quality assurance checklists, and clash detection schedules.  

Cultural readiness: This is often the hardest barrier. Individuals who have spent 20 years mastering 2D CAD may resist transitioning to BIM, fearing obsolescence or loss of productivity. The chapter offers strategies: executive sponsorship, celebrating early wins, pairing resistant staff with enthusiastic early adopters, and framing BIM not as replacing their expertise but as enhancing it.
