In Siwa Oasis, summer is 45°C. In Aswan, 48°C. Yet old houses there stay at 28°C all day, without AC, without electricity. How? They stole an idea from 5,000 years ago: the courtyard.
*1. The Physics of a Hosh*
A courtyard house (Hosh) is not a house with a garden. It is a machine.
During the day, sun heats the courtyard air. Hot air rises up like a chimney, pulling cool air from the rooms into the courtyard. The rooms have small windows facing the courtyard, not the street. So air moves constantly: room → courtyard → sky.
At night, it reverses. Desert sky is very cold. The courtyard floor, made of stone or mud, radiates heat to the sky and becomes cold. Cold air sinks and flows into the rooms. The house breathes, day and night.
No fan. No energy. Just physics.
*2. The Nubian Dome Trick*
Nubian houses in Gharb Soheil use a vaulted roof, not flat. Why? Hot air goes up into the dome. People live below in cool air. The dome has small holes at the top - hot air escapes.
Also, the dome is made of mud bricks, 40cm thick. Mud is a perfect insulator. It takes 12 hours for heat to pass through a 40cm mud wall. So daytime heat reaches inside at midnight, when it's already cold outside. Natural time-delay.
A concrete wall 20cm thick? Heat passes in 2 hours. Your house is an oven by 12 PM.
*3. Siwa's Secret: Salt and Mud*
In Siwa, houses are made of Kershef - a mix of salt from Siwa Lake, mud, and straw. Salt crystals reflect sunlight, mud insulates. The result: walls that sparkle and stay cool.
Old Siwan houses have no windows to the outside at all. Only to the courtyard. Why? Sandstorms. Outside wall is a fortress against wind and heat. Inside wall opens to peaceful, shaded courtyard with an olive tree and a well.
Compare that to New Cairo villas: huge glass windows facing west, direct sun, then 5 AC units running 24/7.
*4. Water in the Middle*
Every Siwa and Nubian courtyard has water: a small fountain, a clay pot, or a shallow pool. Evaporation cools air by 5-7 degrees. It's the same as modern evaporative coolers, but silent and beautiful.
The sound of water also tells your brain it's cool. Psychological cooling is real. Your body relaxes.
*5. How to Use It Today*
You don't need to live in Siwa to use this:
- If you have a villa, don't build rooms around a corridor. Build rooms around a small courtyard, even 4x4 meters. Plant one tree in it.
- If you have a flat, create a mini-courtyard with your balcony: close two sides with mashrabiya, put plants and a small water bowl, open your rooms to it, not to the street.
- Use mud plaster (Tafal) on one interior wall. It regulates humidity and cools. One bag costs 60 EGP in Aswan.
- Paint roof white with lime (Geer). Old Nubians did this. White reflects 80% of sun.
Our ancestors didn't have AC because they didn't need it. They had architecture that was smarter than a machine.
We have the machines, but we lost the architecture. Time to bring it back.
