If you look at photos of Cairo in 1950, every flat had a big balcony, 2 meters deep. People lived there: breakfast, tea, sleeping in summer, plants, birds. Today? New apartments have no balcony, or a tiny 80cm "French balcony" you can't stand on. What happened?
*1. Balconies Were The Air Conditioner*
Before AC, the balcony was the coolest place in the house.
Design: deep (2-2.5m), high ceiling, north-facing. In summer, Egyptian families moved their beds to the balcony at night. The famous "sleeping on the balcony" - Nomna Fil Balacona. Why? Night breeze in Cairo drops from 35°C to 27°C, but inside a concrete box it stays 33°C. Balcony had cross-ventilation.
Also, balcony roof shaded the room below. A 2m deep balcony blocks sun from entering the living room from April to September. Natural shading. No need for curtains or AC.
Modern shallow balconies 80cm do nothing. Sun enters fully. Room heats up.
*2. The Building Law That Killed Them*
In 1970s-90s, Cairo had a law: balconies do not count in building floor area ratio (FAR) if they are less than 10% of flat area. Developers found a trick: build balcony, then after selling, owner closes it with bricks to make it a room. Free extra room, more profit.
Government responded: in 2008 law, balconies started counting 50% in FAR, and closing balconies became heavily fined. Developers' response? Don't build balconies at all. Build full concrete facade with small windows. No balcony = no risk of illegal closing, more sellable indoor area.
Result: we lost balconies because of a fight over square meters.
*3. What We Lost Socially*
Balcony was not architecture. It was social media.
- Morning: Umm Ahmed yells from balcony to vegetable seller below: "Ya Mohammed, hatee kilo tamatem!"
- Afternoon: kids watch street from balcony, learn city
- Evening: whole family has tea, watches people, gossips - "Who is that visiting the neighbor?"
- Night: sleeping, stories
Balcony connected flat to street. Now, with no balcony, flats are boxes sealed from city. People don't know their neighbors. Kids don't see street life. We became isolated.
In Europe, they realized this and made balconies mandatory again. In Paris, new law 2020: every new flat must have outdoor space 3 sqm minimum. They learned from us, after we forgot.
*4. How to Bring Them Back*
If you are building now:
- Make balcony at least 1.8m deep, not 0.8m. Depth is what makes it usable.
- North or east facing if possible - avoids harsh west sun
- Put a tap and drain there - for plants and cleaning
- Don't put AC outdoor unit in balcony! It blows hot air where you sit. Put it on roof.
- Add mashrabiya or plant trellis for privacy, not solid wall
If you have a tiny French balcony: put plants that hang down - "Set El Hosn" (bougainvillea). It shades below and gives green.
Cairo without balconies is like Alexandria without sea. It's not Cairo anymore. We need to bring back the balcony, not as decoration, but as the most important room in the Egyptian house.
