Every building in Egypt has a flat roof. 100% of buildings. It's our biggest unused asset. While in Europe they fight for every square meter, we leave 100-200 sqm empty, full of dust, satellite dishes, and water tanks. Why?
*1. The Roof Was a House*
In Upper Egypt and villages, the roof IS a house. It's called "Sath."
What happens on a village Sath in one day?
- Morning: bread baking in sun (Aish Shamsi)
- Noon: drying okra, molokhia, dates, tomatoes
- Afternoon: sleeping under shade for kids
- Evening: family dinner, cool breeze
- Night: sleeping in summer, watching stars
- Whole year: raising pigeons, chickens
The roof is a productive floor, not a cover. In Cairo's informal areas, same thing: roof has rooms built illegally because it's valuable land. People know: roof = house.
In licensed buildings, law says you can't build on roof. So it stays empty and useless. A law against common sense.
*2. Why Flat Roofs Are Perfect for Egypt (And Pitched Roofs Are Not)*
Egypt has 0.1% rain in most areas. Flat roof works perfectly. Pitched red-tile roofs you see in New Cairo compounds? They are fake, imported from Europe where it rains and snows. In Egypt, pitched roofs:
- Create useless hot attic (55°C)
- Tiles fly in wind, break, leak
- Cost 3x more
- Can't be used
Flat roof is cheaper, usable, and you can put water tanks, solar heaters, and plants. It's the right answer for desert.
*3. The Heat Disaster of Untreated Roofs*
An untreated flat roof is a heat machine. In July, concrete roof slab reaches 65°C at 2 PM. It radiates heat into the top floor flat until 2 AM. Top floor flats are 5-7 degrees hotter than floors below. That's why top floor is cheapest.
Solution is old: white wash + mud + tiles.
- Traditional: put 5cm of mud (Tafal) then white lime (Geer). Temperature drops from 65°C to 42°C.
- Modern cheap: white ceramic tiles (Kashani) or white cement paint. Reflects 70% of sun.
- Best: 10cm soil + plants = green roof. Drops roof temp to 35°C and gives you food.
Cost: white paint for 100 sqm roof = 2000 EGP. Saves 30% of AC bill for top floor. Payback in 2 months.
*4. What To Do With Your Roof Today*
If you own a building or have access:
- *Clean it.* Remove broken satellite dishes. One dish works for whole building.
- *Paint it white.* Or put white tiles, light color.
- *Add shade.* Simple pergola with bougainvillea or grape vines. Grape gives shade + fruit in 1 year.
- *Add seating.* A few wooden pallets, cushions, and you have a living room under stars. Cairo nights on roof are 28°C with breeze while inside is 33°C.
- *Plant.* Start with 5 pots: mint, basil, lemongrass - all grow in Cairo sun with little water. Then tomatoes, peppers.
- *Pigeons?* If you like, but keep clean.
In Beirut, they turned roofs into bars and restaurants. In Cairo, we can turn roofs into farms and bedrooms.
The roof is not the end of the building. It is the beginning of another one.
