Article 1: AL-AQSA COMPOUND

🕌 *AL-AQSA EXPLAINED #1 | The Entire Compound*

Most people think Al-Aqsa is ONE mosque. It's not.

Al-Aqsa is a *144,000 sqm compound* (Haram al-Sharif) inside the Old City of Jerusalem. It contains:

*What’s inside:*
- *Dome of the Rock (Qubbat As-Sakhra)* - Built 691 CE, the iconic golden dome. NOT a mosque, it's a shrine built over the sacred rock.
- *Al-Qibli Mosque* - The main prayer hall at the southern end, built 705-715 CE. This is where daily prayers happen. Capacity ∼5,000.
- *Dome of the Chain, Islamic Museum, Marwani Prayer Hall, gardens, fountains, and porticos.*

*Key Facts for Architects:*
- 3rd holiest site in Islam - Location of Isra & Mi'raj
- Surrounded by historic walls with 12 gates (10 open, 2 closed)
- UNESCO World Heritage Site
- Architectural layers: Umayyad, Abbasid, Fatimid, Ayyubid, Mamluk, Ottoman - 1300 years of building on top of each other.

This is not just a building. It's a city of architecture.

Save this map. Most architects don't know the difference between Dome of the Rock and Al-Qibli Mosque.
