🕌 *AL-AQSA EXPLAINED #2 | Dome of the Rock - 691 CE*
The most photographed building in Islamic architecture, and the most misunderstood.
*What it is NOT:* It's not a mosque. It's a _shrine_ (mashhad) built to protect and showcase the Sacred Rock (As-Sakhra).
*Architecture Breakdown:*
*1. The Plan - Perfect Geometry:*
- Centralized octagonal plan - 20.2m diameter inner octagon
- Double ambulatory (two circular corridors) around the rock - inspired by Byzantine martyria, but made Islamic
- Every dimension is symbolic - 8 sides = 8 angels carrying the Throne?
*2. The Dome - Engineering 1300 years ago:*
- Original wooden dome, double-shelled
- Diameter: 20.44m, Height: 35.3m
- First monumental dome in Islamic history
- Exterior covered in gold (re-gilded in 1993 with gold donated by King Hussein)
- Drum supported by 4 piers + 12 columns
*3. The Decoration - First Islamic Mosaic Program:*
- Interior: 1,280 sqm of mosaics, no human figures - only vegetal, geometric, and calligraphy
- Verses from Surah Al-Isra and Yasin - the first time Quran was used as architectural decoration at this scale
- Byzantine craftsmen built it, but with a new Islamic vocabulary
*Why it matters for architects:*
This was the Umayyads saying: "Islam has arrived, and its architecture is as grand as Rome and Byzantium." They used Byzantine techniques to create something completely new.
Built by Caliph Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan in 691 CE - before the Al-Qibli Mosque even existed.
*Architect's lesson: You don't need to invent new structure to create a new style. You need new meaning*
