Point, line, plane are 2D concepts. Volume is 3D reality. Ching says: Volume is plane extended, it has length, width, height. It's the space we live in.
There are two volumes: Solid volume - mass of building, brick, concrete. And void volume - empty space inside, room, courtyard. Architecture is the dance between solid and void. You design both.
Every solid creates void around it. Every void is defined by solids around it. In desert, building is solid, desert is void. In city, street is void, buildings are solids defining it.
Ching teaches 5 ways to organize solid and void: 1- Additive - add volumes together like LEGO. 2- Subtractive - start with big block and carve out. 3- Intersection - volumes crossing. 4- Deformation - bending volume. 5- Articulation - expressing joints.
Most developer architecture in Egypt is only additive - boxes added. Result boring. Good architecture uses subtractive: Carve courtyard from block, carve terrace, carve loggia. Subtraction creates shadow, depth, interest.
For technical coordination: Volume is MEP nightmare. Duct needs volume, beam needs volume, false ceiling needs volume. If you think only in plan (2D), clashes happen. Think in volume from start: Reserve 80cm volume above ceiling for all services.
Instagram trick: Show same building as solid model vs void model (inverted). People love seeing void as shape, not emptiness. Caption: "We don't design buildings, we design voids where life happens."
