🕌 *AL-AQSA EXPLAINED #5 | The Layers - 1300 Years in One Building*
Al-Aqsa is not one building. It's 5 buildings on top of each other. If you cut a section through its walls, you would see history.
*THE ARCHITECTURAL STRATIGRAPHY:*
*LAYER 1: BYZANTINE FOUNDATION (Before 638 CE)*
The platform itself (Haram) is a Herodian retaining wall, 2000 years old. The Romans and Byzantines left it empty. When Umar ibn al-Khattab arrived in 638 CE, he found it as a garbage dump. He cleaned it himself.
*LAYER 2: UMAYYAD STATEMENT (691-715 CE)*
Caliph Abd al-Malik builds Dome of the Rock (691) - gold, mosaics, octagon. His son al-Walid builds Al-Qibli (705). Message: Islam is permanent here. Technique: Byzantine mosaicists + new Islamic program. First time Quran verses become architectural ornament.
*LAYER 3: ABBASID & FATIMID SURVIVAL (749-1066 CE)*
Earthquakes, earthquakes, earthquakes. The Great Rift Valley destroys Al-Qibli 3 times. Each time it gets rebuilt smaller. Abbasids (754, 780) patch it. Fatimids (1034) reduce it from 15 aisles to 7 - the current size. They invent seismic pragmatism: smaller is stronger.
*LAYER 4: AYYUBID & MAMLUK FRAMING (1187-1517 CE)*
Saladin liberates in 1187, brings the wooden minbar. Mamluks don't touch the center - they build the _frame_: 4 minarets, Bab al-Qattanin Gate (masterpiece of stone muqarnas), madrasas around the compound walls, fountains. They turn a holy site into a holy city.
*LAYER 5: OTTOMAN TILE & MODERN PRESERVATION (1517-Today)*
Suleiman the Magnificent (1545) tiles the exterior of Dome of the Rock with 40,000 Iznik tiles - blue, turquoise, green. The tiles you see today are Ottoman, not Umayyad. After 1969 fire, modern restoration: concrete, steel, new minbar replica (2007) made in Jordan using same interlocking technique.
*Architect's Lesson - The Big Idea:*
Al-Aqsa teaches us that great sacred architecture is never "finished." It's a palimpsest. No architect ever demolished the previous one. They added, reduced, tiled, framed, repaired.
Your buildings won't last 1300 years if you try to make them perfect. They will last if you make them _layerable_.
*This ends the Al-Aqsa Chapter.*
*NEXT HISTORIC SITE?*
We did Al-Aqsa (Jerusalem). What next?
- *The Umayyad Mosque of Damascus (706 CE)*
- *Al-Azhar & Cairo Fatimid City*
- *The Great Mosque of Cordoba (785 CE)*
